Floyce Vickers Tillman

VALDOSTA — Floyce Vickers Tillman, 89, of Valdosta, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Langdale Hospice House. She was born on July 4, 1922, to pioneer parents, Burk Auley Vickers and Sulula Lehman Vickers in Lowndes County near Hahira. Floyce enjoyed talking about her great-great-great-grandfather who was one of the first four original founders of Lowndes County. She had 10 sisters and one brother. Mrs. Tillman was a 1940 graduate of Hahira High School.

Floyce was a charter member of Crossroads Baptist Church, having been an active member of Lee Street Baptist Church since 1951 before Crossroads founding.

While her husband, Mac, was away as a paratrooper in WWII, she and her daughter lived with Mrs. Rilla Hall in Hahira. Floyce worked at Moody Air Force Base packing parachutes during this time. After her husband’s military service, they lived in Columbia, S.C., for approximately eight years and then returned home to Valdosta. Floyce said many times “there’s no place like home.” Floyce retired after 26 years working for the Georgia Power Company.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine T. and Joe Kendrick of Tallahassee, Fla., SuBeth T. and Bill Garland of Valdosta; grandchildren, Robert (Renea) Kendrick, Jennifer (Ken) Sasser, Casey (Wes) Kennedy, Cy Garland, Chris (Amanda) Garland; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and John Sasser, Jack and Lex Kennedy, Garrett and Warren Garland and Alexia Solis; four sisters, Alma Shirley, Katherine Sims, Peggy Canady and June (Evans) Rambo; sister-in-law, Roberta Sharpless; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
