Carl G. Segal

-- — Dr. Carl G. Segal, 95, of Valdosta died at his residence on Saturday, May 5, 2012. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 18, 1916 to the late Dr. Maxwell and Reba Shengold Segal and was reared in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. Dr. Segal was a graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he returned to civilian life and had an optometry practice for three years, when he was called back to serve in the U.S. Navy. After military training, he was assigned as chief radioman on the Jacob Jones. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, the “Hornet” rescued them; and after a period of military college, was made chief analyst for the Department of Defense. He retired in 1975 and continued his love of photography for many years. He was a member of Temple Israel.

  Survivors include his wife of twenty years, Mary Segal of Valdosta; a sister, Shirley Friedman; nephew and family, Mr. Seth Friedman of Maryland; nephew and family Mr. Zachary Friedman of Israel; step-children, Mr. Charles Foster and family, Mr. Richard Foster and family, Mrs. Sue Walters and family; five grandchildren and their families and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Frankel and a brother, Stanley Segal. The family wishes to thank South Georgia Home Health and Hospice of South Georgia for their wonderful dedication to Carl?s needs.

  A graveside service for Dr. Carl Segal was held at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 07, 2012 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Moshe Elbaz officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Segal’s name may be made to South Georgia Home Health or Hospice of South Georgia.
