Wilton Ray Corbett Jr.

VALDOSTA — Wilton Ray Corbett Jr., 91, of Lake Park, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Fellowship Home in Brooks County, after a period of declining health. Born in Lake Park on Oct. 13, 1920, he was the son of the late Wilton Ray Sr. and Ada Marie Carter Corbett. He was a graduate of Lake Park High School where he played baseball and basketball. Mr. Corbett served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. While stationed in Rhode Island, he met and married his wife, the former Sue Conti. After his military service, the young couple returned to Lowndes County where he worked briefly in the electrical business with his brother before joining the Civil Service at Moody Air Force Base where he worked until his retirement. Mr. Corbett was a devoted Braves baseball fan and loved watching his grandson play baseball. He was a skilled craftsman, who loved whittling wood and creating the things he needed. For many years he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lake Park United Methodist and he later attended church at Fellowship Home. Mr. Corbett was a good ole plain and honest soul who loved his chewing tobacco.

Mr. Corbett was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Conti Corbett; a brother, Buddy Corbett; and a sister, Lillian Derriso.

Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Mary Corbett of Lake Park; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Bowen and Ashley Corbett of Valdosta; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amanda and Joseph Pierce of Augusta; and a wife, Catherine Corbett of Valdosta.

Graveside service will be held today, Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Partnership Fund, 203 Woodrow Wilson Drive, Valdosta GA 31602.
