L.E. (Gene) Guess

VALDOSTA — L.E. (Gene) Guess, 75, lifelong resident of Valdosta, died  Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness. Born on July 21, 1935, the son of the late Elisha G. and Sally Griffis Guess, he was a 1954 graduate of Valdosta High School. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe, and when he returned to Valdosta, he began a 41-year career with PCA Papermill in Clyattville, retiring in 1998. During the years he spent at PCA, he worked shifts with many of his close friends. He loved to meet frequently with his Valdosta High School classmates. He loved spending time at the beach, traveling and fishing with family, and he loved his dogs, Catalina and Charlie.  

Survivors are his wife of 51 years, Geraldine Warren Guess of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mike Morgan of Valdosta; son, Tony E. Guess of Navarre, Fla.; son-in-law, Bobby (Vickie) Horne of Tallahassee, Fla.; grandchildren, Tiffany and Matthew Stubbs of Valdosta, Michael Morgan of Valdosta, Robert Horne of Tallahassee, Fla., Allison Horne and Sarah Horne of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister-in-law, Florene Guess of Valdosta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Betty Warren of Valdosta, Jimmy and Charlotte Warren of Thomasville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Guess was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Ann Guess Horne; brother, Po Ed Guess; sister, Margaret Guess; mother-in-law, Ora Lee Harris; and stepfather-in-law, T.J. Harris.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Jere Via will officiate. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home from 6–8 p.m. today. Flowers will be received or donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ, 2801 New Statenville Hwy, Valdosta, GA 31606; or Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602.
