Catherine Hightower Cowart, 88, of Valdosta, died at her residence, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 after a period of declining health. Born in Lowndes County to the late C.S. & Lillie Hightower, she was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Cowart was a graduate of Valdosta High School and following high school she worked for several years as a bookkeeper at the Bruce Milling Company. She was a homemaker and caretaker in the truest sense of the word. She loved to cook wonderful meals for her family, huge Sunday dinners and even meals for the workers at their family business. She spent a lot of time caring for her yard and taking care of her flowers. Mrs. Cowart was also devoted to her church, West End Presbyterian Church, preparing fellowship meals and serving in children‚s programs.
Survivors include her daughter and son- in- law, Cathy and Raymond Blanton, a son and daughter- in- law, Charles and Julie Cowart all of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Toby and Stephanie Blanton, Jamie and Matt Anderson, Jessie Cowart III, Justin and Christina Cowart all of Valdosta, eight great grandchildren, Emily Blanton, Tucker Blanton, Evan Gaiss, Jacey Gaiss, Gunner Anderson, Jesse Caleb Cowart, Jarrett Cash Cowart, Josie Claire Cowart all of Valdosta. Also surviving are three sisters and a brother in law, Ida Lou Carter, Aline Voltz, and Ruth & George Smith, all of Valdosta; three brothers and two sisters in law, B.S. Hightower, Ed & Madyln Hightower, and John & Mary Frances Hightower, all of Valdosta; and a brother in law, Joe Nell; and numerous nieces & nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Cowart, two sisters, Anna Pearl Nell, and Clyde H. Moore, a sister in law, Sara Hightower and a brother in law, Gerald Voltz. A special thanks to Faye & Stephanie for all their extra love and care.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb., 18, 2013 in the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend John Akers will officiate. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia.
