Billy W. Grubbs

VALDOSTA — Billy W. Grubbs, 81, of Valdosta, died peacefully with his family present on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at his residence following a short illness. He was born on July 10, 1031, in Perry, Fla., to the late William and Lucille Grubbs. He was the first of 10 children and attended the Taylor County School System. He entered military service at the age of 19 and served in the U.S. Navy as a Com/Sat Crewman aboard the USS Yorktown. Following his military service, Mr. Grubbs attended the University of Florida where he met and married Theresa Peterson on June 16, 1956. Mr. Grubbs enjoyed 30 years of service to Moody Air Force Base as an Aviation Electrician from February 1956 until his retirement in August 1986, where he worked on the T-33, F-89, F-86, F-94, T-38, and the T-37. Mr. Grubbs enjoyed spending time with his children and family, hunting with the Withlacoochee Hunting Club, fishing (salt and fresh water) and camping. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Lowndes Touchdown Club and the Lowndes Band Boosters.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Theresa Grubbs of Valdosta; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Rowland of Lake Park, and Jennifer Louise Burns and her partner, Dr. Mark Johnson of Atlanta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James David Grubbs of Valdosta, Jeffrey Austin and Teresa Grubbs of Warner Robins; five grandchildren, Scott Rowland of Valdosta, Austin Grubbs of Warner Robins, Alyson Burns of Charleston, S.C., Emily Burns of Atlanta and Emerald Gordon of Warner Robins; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Baleigh Rowland of Lake Park; a brother, Herbert Grubbs; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Norman Shaw; brother and sister-in-law, Louie and Eleanor Grubbs; brother, Tom Grubbs, all of Perry, Fla.; sister, Dorothy Grubbs Reaves of Thomasville; sister-in-law, Sarah Grubbs of Shady Grove, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, John, Rufus and Jerry Grubbs; parents-in-law, Carl M. and Margaret A. Peterson; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Grubbs.

Service for Billy W. Grubbs will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Chaplain Creston Hulett officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
