Melvyn Owen Samuelson Sr.

-- — Melvyn Owen Samuelson Sr., 80, of Valdosta died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 1, 1932 in Bayland, Miss. to the late Norman and Ida Farnell Samuelson. He was a retired aerospace engineer for Martin Marietta and served as a project manager. Mr. Samuelson was very involved with Habitat for Humanity as well as being involved with children’s activities at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, where he was a member. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was a master carpenter and craftsman.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Fletcher Samuelson of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Owen and Leslie Samuelson of Macon and Tim and Debi Samuelson of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Andy Earle of Atlanta and Dena and Mike Ruiz of Valdosta; seven grandchildren, Austin Samuelson, Ric Sanders, Tyler Sanders, Maverick Earle, Colby Ruiz, Logan Ruiz and Emily Ruiz; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Evelyn Samuelson of Merridian, Miss.; sisters and brother-in-law, Mona Kelly of Searcy, Ark., Myrtle and Ben Gainey of Cocoa, Fla., Sylvia Tramel of Montgomery, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, David and Becky Samuelson of Wharton, Texas and a sister, Rosemary Samuelson of Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Gray, and a brother, Alvin.

A memorial service for Melvyn Owen Samuelson, Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday March 4, 2013 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Cummings and the Rev. Hale Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 2010 East Cypress Street Valdosta, Ga. 31602; the Children’s Advocacy Center Post Office Box 903, Valdosta, Ga. 31603; or the Pregnancy Support Clinic, 214 West Park Avenue, Valdosta, Ga. 31602.
