Annie Ruth Johnson Mayfield

-- — Annie Ruth Johnson Mayfield, 89, departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman, Ga. Annie Ruth was born to the late Charlie Johnson and Leola Marshall Johnson on Sept. 5, 1923, in Lowndes County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mae Nora Dixon; her brother, Samuel Johnsonl; and her brother-in-law, James Dixon.

Annie Ruth was educated in the Lowndes County and Valdosta City school systems and later earned a bachelor of science degree from Paine College in Augusta, Ga. She continued her education at Howard University in Washington, D.C. After retiring from her job in Washington, she moved back to Valdosta, Ga. Annie Ruth assisted the Lowndes County Board of Elections by helping voters with the election process. She enjoyed gardening, and she was a member of the Bunche Street Bunch.

Annie Ruth received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Concord Baptist Church in Lake Park, Ga. She also previously attended Antioch Baptist Church in Valdosta. Annie Ruth was an active member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Valdosta, where Dr. William C. Morgan is the pastor.

She is survived by her sister, Annie Pearl Gandy; her aunt, Lola Beatrice Wyche; five nephews, Samuel Davis, Charles (Cathy) Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Keith Johnson and Wayne Dixon; five nieces, Beverly Dixon, Ruthie (Jerome) Sirmans, Valica Sampson, Carla Gandy and Bethany (John) Phillips; two sisters-in-law, Tillie Mae Johnson and Essie Johnson; great-nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Morning Star Baptist Church and Pastor William C. Morgan will officiate. Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. — Harrington Funeral Home Inc.
