Douglas Clayton Beatty

-- — Retired Colonel Douglas Clayton Beatty, M.D., 64, passed away in the arms of his family at Shands Medical Center on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 after a brief illness. A ceremony with military honors was held on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 at Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla.

Dr. Beatty was born Dec. 30, 1947, in Sanford, Fla. He graduated from Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine in 1972. He joined the Air Force and had a distinguished career, receiving numerous honors including Flight Surgeon of the Year in 1976. He retired as a Colonel in 1989. Upon retirement, Dr. Beatty began a second career in medicine, working for a number of private practices and emergency rooms in the state of Georgia. He was a true renaissance man: a botanist, an engineer, a physician, a poet, an artist.

Most of all he was a loyal and loving friend, father, and companion. His life touched many and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his mother, Ann Beatty of Panama City Beach, Fla.; five siblings: Bryant Hodgson of Dunwoody, Ga., David Beatty of Athens, Ga., John Beatty of Canton, Ga., Lisa Brown of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Laura Becker of Independence, Mo.

He is also survived by Jean Beatty of Valdosta, Ga. and six children: Valerie McLaughlin of Statesboro, Ga., John Beatty of Edgefield S.C., Timothy Beatty of Lake Park, Ga., Mary Beatty Wise of Evans, Ga., Michael Beatty of Valdosta, Ga., and James Beatty of Valdosta, Ga.; Kristi Beatty Crum of Danville, Calif., the daughter of Barbara Beatty Prasse of Little Rock, Ark.; 16 grandchildren and numerous extended family members and dear friends.
