Nancy B. Layton

--- — Nancy Vimont Bean Layton passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2012. She was born on Oct. 5, 1922, in Savannah, Ga., to Louis Vimont Bean, Sr. and Isabelle Cunningham Postell Bean. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Louis Vimont Bean, Jr., of Atlanta, her sister, Eleanor Postell Bean Hereford, of Decatur, her daughter, Nancy Cheryl Layton Smith of Waycross, and a grandson, Richard Taylor Smith, of Houston, Texas (formerly from Waycross).

Having resided in Bainbridge, Waycross, and Paducah, Ky., in her youth and teenage years, she moved back to Waycross in January 1940, where she graduated from Waycross High School in May, married in September and raised her family.

Nancy was an interior decorator for R.B. Zachry Furniture Company for over 13 years and a member of Grace Episcopal Church and Trinity United Methodist Church, serving on their altar guilds. She was also very involved in the community, being a member of the Cotillion Club, the Waycross Junior Women’s Club, the Service League of Waycross and a volunteer member of the Pink Ladies at Memorial Hospital.

In 1989 she moved to Orange Park, Fla., where she joined St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, serving on the altar guild there as well.  In 1999 she moved to Jacksonville, Fla., to be closer to her family and joined Christ the Redeemer Church of Ponte Vedra, Fla..

Although tennis was her favorite sport, she loved family and was always supportive of them and their areas of interest. Wonderful friendships and memories were created over the years during the annual Okefenokee Invitational Golf Tournament and other tournaments when she would open her home to many of her children’s friends who came to participate. Most importantly she loved the Lord and shared her faith with many throughout her life.

Survivors include a son, Charles E. “Boog” Layton III, and daughter-in-law, Leslie Cunningham Layton, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, William M. “Mitt” Layton, and daughter-in-law, Jill Lenore Layton, of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Terri Layton Herzog of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Debbie Layton Morgan and her husband, Kyle William Morgan, Jr. of Vero Beach, Fla., Leigh Layton Sidell and her husband, Dr. Robert “Bobby” Sidell, of Aberdeen, N.C., William M. “Mitt” Layton, Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Lindsay Layton Baldwin and her husband, Darrick Baldwin, of St. Augustine, Fla., Whitney Layton Knudsen and her husband, Paul Knudsen, of Jacksonville, Fla., Matthew Wells Layton and Michael James Layton of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and John L. Smith and his wife, Robin, of Statesboro; nine great-grandchildren, Gerald William “Chase” Herzog III of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Madison Kate Morgan and Halle Layton Morgan of Vero Beach, Fla., Caden P. Baldwin and Colton Graham Baldwin of St. Augustine, Fla., Layton and Patreece Smith of St. Louis, Mo., Kayla Durrance of Nashville, Tenn. and Joseph Durrence of Glennville, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. at Miles-Odum Funeral Home, 130 Screven Avenue, Waycross, immediately followed by a graveside service in Oakland Cemetery, 2410 Alice Street, Waycross, with the Rev. David Sheffield of Christ the Redeemer Church, Ponte Vedra, Fla., officiating.

The family wishes to acknowledge and express its sincere gratitude to Dr. Michael Till and staff, her many other doctors and staffs, Life Management Advisors, Heartland Hospice, In Home Care, and to the many personal caregivers for the amazing love and kindness they gave to Nancy and her family.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that you please consider making memorial donations to the church or charity of your choosing. Please sign the guest book online at www.milesodumfuneralhome.com.— Miles-Odum Funeral Home of Waycross is in charge of the arrangements.
