Frances Hackel Golivesky, 67, of Valdosta died at Langdale Hospice House on Aug. 5, 2012. Born in Columbus, on Nov. 20, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Joseph Hackel and the late Sarah Gilman Hackel.
Frances was a graduate of Columbus High School, Columbus, Ga. and a graduate of the University of George with a BSEd. She did further graduate work at Georgia State University and Valdosta State University.
She was also rush chairman and vice president of Delta Phi Epsilon Psi Chapter, University of Georgia. She was voted Best Pledge like her mother who was Best Pledge the first year DPHIE opened.
Mrs. Golivesky taught in the Atlanta School Systems from 1965-1969 and was voted, “Groovy Teacher of the Year” by the students. Another two years in DeKalb provided her the opportunity to be Dean of Girls at Peachtree High School in DeKalb County and to work with administration.
She taught a total of 12 years in the Valwood School System and was named STAR TEACHER OF THE YEAR in 1995 and 1997. She was vice president of West Gordon PTO as well as president of Valdosta Middle School PTO. She served as vice president of the South Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary and was a member of the Book Club and helped write the club’s history for its 50th year celebration. Mrs. Golivesky worked for The Valdosta Daily Times for two years, writing most of the features and a column. In her earlier years in Valdosta, she had a food catering service for a short time.
Survivors are her husband of 41 years Norman Golivesky; two daughters, Marcie and husband Jason Maddox of St. Simons, Robin Golivesky of Sandy Springs; son, Alan and wife Shellie Golivesky of Sandy Springs, and grandsons, Devin and Grant Golivesky of Sandy Springs; sister, Marcia Hackel of Miami, Fla.; brother, Gilman Hackel and wife Lynda of Columbus; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hackel of Miami, Fla.; brother-in-law, Lamar Golivesky of Valdosta; and nephew, Jody Hackel and wife, Lene and daughters, Marcia and Sasha of Alpharetta; nephew, Josh Hackel and wife Melissa and son and daughter, Gil and Claire of Pensacola; nephew, Harry Hausman and wife BJ and children Ashley Hausman of Orange Park, Fla., and Jason and Kristen Hausman of Green Cove Springs, Fla. and children Talan and Cora Hausman; niece, Karen Stark and Sid Stark of Charleston, S.C., and children Brian Stark and wife Carla and children Hudson and Asher of Phoenix, Ariz. and Jodi Smith and husband, Greg Smith of Reston, Va.; and a very, very special friend, Janeen Josey.
Graveside services for Mrs. Golivesky will be held in Sunset Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. Rabbi Moshe Elbaz will officiate.
