Elsie Smith Johnson

-- — Elsie Smith Johnson, 88, of Stockton passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Langdale Hospice House after a period of declining health. Mrs. Johnson was born on May 29, 1924 to the late James P. & Susie Register Smith of Clinch County. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty four years, Paul L. Johnson, a daughter, Eva Suelyn Johnson and six brothers.

She was a member of Stockton Baptist Church where she served as pianist for many years. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. During the late 60’s, Mrs. Elsie (as she was affectingly called) along with two of her church friends Bruce Williams and Smitty Allen formed a trio “The Gospel Three”. They blessed many hearts (for approximately 20 years) as they traveled South Georgia and North Florida with their Southern Gospel Music.  

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law    Larry (Carolyn) Johnson of Stockton, Leon (Diane) Johnson of Stockton, four grandchildren: Libby (Brad) Bennett of Nashville, Ga., Jason (Ali) Johnson of Stockton, Brooke (John Devner) Roberts, Stockton, Brittany (Ben) Robbins of Ashburn, four step grandchildren: Stacy (Diana) Ray, Tammy (Tony) Holton, Teressa Kistler and Scott (Ceilah) Ray, three great-grandchildren: Jacob and Levi Bennett and Emma Johnson, several step great-grandchildren, sister Sallie White of Moultrie, brother and sister-in-law Robert (Edith) Smith of Hazlehurst, and several other relatives.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2012 in the Stockton Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5: p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the funeral home.  Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Stockton Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Attention: Cemetery Fund, 262 Church Rd, Stockton, GA 31649.
