VALDOSTA —
Chief Warrant Officer L.C. (Milton) Hughes Jr., was born June 27, 1937, in Dublin, Ga., to the late Lewis and Willie Mae Hughes. He was educated in the public school system of Laurens County, Ga. He then joined the U.S. Army and served his country for 23 years. He proudly retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. During his time in the service, he received numerous awards including The Army Accommodation Medal along with other honors. He later obtained his bachelor’s degree in business from Colombia College and a master’s degree in theology from Lael College and graduate school.
He was ordained as a deacon and minister at Macedonia First Baptist Church. He was a minister of the gospel and dedicated his love, care and comfort of people by serving 10 years as a Chaplain for United Hospice where he served terminally ill patients and their families through loss and grief. He also volunteered his time visiting nursing homes, local and VA Hospitals, providing spiritual service for those in need. During this time, he received The Valdosta Daily Times Senior Living Showcase Super Citizen’s Award. Mr. L.C. Hughes was also a member of Jeremiah Lodge 182 in Cochran, Ga.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Hughes.
He leaves behind a loving wife of 50 years, Georgia Mae Hughes of Valdosta; three sons, Gregory Hughes (Arlene) of Valdosta, Darryl (Dianne) Hughes of McDonough, Ga., and Dwayne Hughes of Orlando, Fla.; one grandson, Codaryl White; three granddaughters, Jamiyah, Ski and Amiyah; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kimora; one brother, Charles Hughes; three sisters, Ruby Dell Forman, Lelia Hughes and Minnie Mae Hughes; one sister in-law, Lilla Jane Hughes; two aunts, Ruby Pitts and Idella Stephenson; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 11 a.m., from the sanctuary of the Macedonia First Baptist Church, 715 J.L. Lomax Drive, Valdosta. The Rev. Willie Harris is pastor and Dr. Norman Edwards will officiate. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cochran, Ga.
