Patricia Hutchinson Whitehurst

VALDOSTA — Patricia Hutchinson Whitehurst, 82, of Adel, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at Sunrise Retirement Home at Johns Creek in Johns Creek, Ga. She was born in Adel on Feb. 17, 1931, to the late Dr. Lee Roy Hutchinson and Thelma Wilkes Hutchinson. She spent her childhood in Adel and was a graduate of Cook High School, Class of 1948. She attended Tift College and earned degrees in History and Music. After college, she married Charles Bernie Whitehurst of Adel, moved to Atlanta, and taught History at North Druid Hills High School in Decatur. She later accompanied him to Baumholder, Germany, where he was serving in the U.S. Army. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of travel, taking her to every continent except Antarctica. In 1957, she returned with her family to the U.S. and settled in Decatur, Ga. While living there, Patricia raised her two sons, returned to teaching on a substitute basis, and never lost her love for Adel. In 1981, she returned to her childhood home and dedicated herself to the Adel community, volunteering in many capacities, both socially and with her church, most notably as pianist for the Adel United Methodist Church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie, in 2004.

Survivors include two sons, David (Beth) Whitehurst and Mark (Kim) Whitehurst of Johns Creek, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Charlie, Caroline, Kevin, James, Katie, Sallie and Kane.

Funeral services for Mrs. Whitehurst will be held at 11a.m.,  Thursday, March 7, 2013, at the Adel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dillard Ensley officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Boone Funeral Home, 202 N. Hutchinson Ave., Adel.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Adel United Methodist Church Stained Glass Fund, 214 S. Hutchinson Ave., Adel, GA 31620.
