Joseph “Lee” Knowles III, 75, of Valdosta, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at South Georgia Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 15, 1937 in Key West, FL, a son of the late Joseph Leeberg and Mildred Gonzaga Knowles. In 1976, he and his family moved to Brunswick, Ga., and Lee was employed at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He later went to work at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, St. Mary’s, Ga., retiring in 1994. From 1998 to 2005 he and his wife made their home in Florida before moving to Valdosta to be closer to family.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Knowles is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, DeeGee Knowles of Valdosta; two sons, Lee Knowles IV of Asheville, N.C., and Johnnie and wife Buffy Knowles of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Lee Knowles V and Jonah Knowles of Asheville, N.C., and Shelby Knowles and Chance Knowles of Valdosta; a brother, Robert Z. and wife Mary Knowles of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Zoe and husband Jimmy White of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Knowles will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 9, 2013, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Schappaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
