VALDOSTA —
Dr. Robert T. Jones graced the world with his presence and his deep booming voice in Cortland, N.Y., on June 19, 1944.
As Bob grew up in Deposit, N.Y., he learned a great love and appreciation in spending summers with his grandfather on the family farm. His curiosity being never-ending led him to be fascinated with radio and all that it entailed. As a young man, his ambition was to be “BJ the DJ.”
He was intrigued with not only the technical equipment of radio, but soon realized that his gift was verbal communication. He loved the stage. He was particularly proud of the role he played as Henry the 8th. His stature and booming voice made his a natural.
He was the recipient of the New York Board of Regents scholarship and attended the Syracuse University where he earned his Doctorate in speech communication. His path took him to many places over his academic career as a professor at not only Syracuse University, but Valdosta State University (at that time Valdosta State College), Barry University in Miami, Fla., Florida International University, Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati.
He wanted his legacy to be that he made a difference and indeed he did.
Survivors include his father, Thomas C. Jones Jr. of Michigan; mother, Ethel L. Ostrom of Pennsacola, Fla.; sister, Sharon Price (Robert) of Pennsacola, Fla.; sons, Darin R. Jones (Crystina) of Washington, D.C., and Erik R. Jones (Rochelle) of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; daughter, Angela Brill (Kevin) of Cincinnati, Ohio; wife, Barbara Tomlinson Jones of Valdosta; and grandchildren, A.J. and Alicia Brill, Colin Jones, Spencer, Sarah and J.D. Tomlinson.
Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Willis officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3-4 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Repeat Boutique.
