California Riley Matchett, age 94, was born on April 11, 1918 in Lakeland, GA to the late James E. Riley, Sr. and Alberta McNeal. She departed this life on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at her residence.
She was educated in the Lowndes County School System. She became a Christian at an early age and was always willing to work. She always united to a church home wherever she went.
Mrs. California Riley was united in holy matrimony in 1947 to the late Mr. Joseph Matchett. She left Valdosta and resided in Detroit, Michigan where she worked for Potte Construction Company. They later moved to Fort Meyers, Florida where she retired. After retirement, she returned home to Valdosta, GA. Upon her return to Valdosta, she became an active member of the Mt. Vienna AME Church where she served as a Stewardess, Missionary, Choir Member and loved to work in the Kitchen until her health began to fail.
Her beloved husband: Joseph Matchett, step mother: Sarah Riley, daughter: Marguarite Riley, brother: James Riley, Jr. and sister: Vashti R. Love, all preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories one sister in law: Velma Matchett of Valdosta, GA; one step daughter: Rev. Dr. Leah Fitchue of Beaver Creek, Ohio; one step granddaughter; Also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Vienna AME Church. Rev. Roy Brown, Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vienna AME Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held on today from 12 Noon - 8 P.M. at the funeral home. —Stevens Funeral Home of Valdosta
