Gertie Mae Taylor Barber

VALDOSTA — Mrs. Gertie Mae Taylor Barber, 88, a lifetime resident of Berrien County, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at Berrien Nursing Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Vickers Church with Rev. Donnie Sloan, Rev. Kenneth Mathews, and Rev. Ronnie Lawson. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lovein Funeral Home in Nashville.

Mrs. Barber was born Sept. 16, 1924 in Worth County to the late Martin R. Taylor and Melissa Holloway Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Theodore Barber; two sons, Don Barber and Wayne Barber; four brothers, James Taylor, Reuben Taylor, Riley Taylor and Rancil Taylor.

Survivors include her children, Tommy & Patricia Barber of Nashville, Elaine & David Peugh of Cordele, Michael Barber of Nashville, Billy Barber of Nashville, Roger Barber of Nashville, Faith & Dean Noles of Nashville; 22 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 26 step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; six sisters, Trudie McNabb, Grace Friar, Josephine Joyce, Geraldine Champa and Rudine Schmittou all of West Berrien Community and Ruth Harris of Jacksonville, Fla.

Mrs. Barber was a loving wife, and devoted christian mother. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, visiting elderly, playing the piano, and writing songs. As a teenager she sang and played the mandolin with the Taylor Quartette. She was a lifelong member of Vickers Church.
