VALDOSTA —
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand, I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, shall give me at day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
Pastor Velma Moore Calhoun was born on April 7, 1959 in Coffee County, Douglas, Ga., to the late Slyvester and Marie Moore. She was the thirteenth child of 16 children.
She leaves to remember her, her loving and supportive husband, Bishop Otis Lee Calhoun; and two children, Omega Calhoun and Melinee Calhoun; two granddaughters, Kierra McGee and Zakiya White; brothers: Albert Tillman (Jeanett) of Douglas, Ga., Apostle John Frank Moore (Lynn) of Douglas, Ga., Howard Smith of Lakeland, Ga., Ronald Moore of Barretts, Ga., Willie Moore (Hilda) of Rochester, N.Y., John Henry Moore of Douglas, Ga., Willie Earl Smith (Lillie) of La.; brothers-in-law, Joseph Calhoun of Lakeland, Ga., Artis Calhoun, Lakeland, Ga., Irvin Riley (LoriAnn), Lakeland, Ga.; sisters, Linda Moore of Adel, Minnie Gloster (Cornell), Lakeland, Ga., Pastor Ruthie Griffin (Roger) of Barretts, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Mary Calhoun, New York City, N.Y., Daisy Mollay of Lakeland, Ga.; four god sons, Anelius Dean and Nehemiah Davis, both of Lakeland, Ga., Joshua Gordon, and Rob, both of Pelham, Ga.; five god daughters, Tonya Bell of Ray City, Kenira Booker, Valdosta, Nehemiah, Gretchen and Shamia Calhoun, all of Lakeland, Ga.; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Pastor Calhoun received the call to the ministry at a very young age in 1976, and she held fast to her calling and election. Though she attended and graduated from college, she held her Christian education more highly because it was her calling by Jesus Christ. She served as Pastor in Nashville, Ga. since 2010, in Lakeland, Ga. since 2009 and as Co-Pastor for many years prior. She loved the Lord and her church family. She was a light to many that were lost. She leaves this light with each of us today; to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord.
Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at Southside Baptist Church. Pastor Austin Deloch Jr., is the Pastor and Bishop Horace Solomon Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Charles Knight Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at Gateway to Heaven Holiness Church in Lakeland, Ga. — Final rites has been entrusted to Harrington Funeral Home.
