VALDOSTA —
Donald E. Griffis of Tampa, Fla., passed away Feb. 5, 2013, as the result of an accident.
He was born on March 31, 1937, to the late Barney D. Sr. and Ruth Howell Griffis of Valdosta.
He graduated from Valdosta High School, Class of ‘55 and served in the U.S. Army.
Don was a creative, sensitive and thoughtful person who loved nature and all living things. He was known and loved for his gentle sense of humor and wry perspective. His sense of style led to a successful career as a buyer for Rich’s Department Stores in Atlanta. He then worked for and retired from administration with MARTA in Atlanta.
He is survived by his closest friend, Young Luu of Tampa, Fla.; his sister, Helen Northcutt of Morven, Ga.; his sister-in-law, Lucy S. Griffis of Hahira; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved dog, Rex.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Paul S. Griffis, Barney D. Griffis Jr., and Bobby N. Griffis; as well as a sister, Marie G. Peck.
A memorial service was held in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 16, 2013. Graveside services will be held on March 2, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church on Hutchinson Pond Road near Cecil, Ga.
