- — To the "whiney" city council members blaming Realtors for pushing the superior county school system. Don't blame us. We only give our clients what "they" ask for!
The VCS BOE came up with a reasonable policy for cell phones in schools after extensive debate and input from parents —specifically, mothers. That policy has failed at VHS because of the lack of will to enforce it. A new policy has been put in place which they will also be unable or reluctant to enforce. This new policy went into effect with no pretense of caring what parents think or want. The administration earns an F.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Mayor and Council contemplating millions of dollars for security, X-rays and bullet-proof glass. How out of touch can they be? Economic times are hard, everyone must sacrifice. If they are that much in fear, then resign please!
Where are the jobs? All I hear about is health care, and pushing this enormous spending bill down our throats. Why can't we get some help in South Georgia with creating some jobs? All the deals are being made behind closed doors and no one knows what's in this 2,708-page health care debacle.
The schools are not trying to hide anything. School officials and SRO's are spending inordinate amounts of time on cases of cell phone theft, to the point they can hardly deal with anything else. You managed to get through high school without a cell phone, why can't your kids? If a school official sees a phone, they can check and see if the phone has been used during school hours.
We aren't trying to hide anything at VHS. The policy was that they could have them but could not take them out during school hours, however, some of the students couldn't follow the rules! Teachers were spending class time taking them up and arguing with students about putting them away and to stop texting.
Keep retreating. The word is "consolidation." No euphemistic expressions like "Unification." To paraphrase the Immortal Bard, "that which we call consolidation, by any other name, would still smell as bad."
There is a house located at 1605 on Madison Highway that burned about a year to a year and a half ago and no one cares. The fire department, city manager, city marshal all drive by there and will not get this house cleaned up. What will it take for the City of Valdosta to get this house cleaned up?

Books: A part of summer adventures
Summer should be a time for swimming, playing, camping, trips, pursuing interests and fun for youngsters taking a break from the school year. It should be a time to recharge their batteries.
-
Memorial Day: A solemn occasion
Memorial Day has taken on many meanings through the years. The unofficial start of summer, a day off from work, a day to honor family and friends who have passed away.

Elections: Creating a two-party region?
Twenty years ago, most area elections were decided during the primaries. Then, almost every candidate qualified as a Democrat. While there may be plenty of challengers on the ballot, many seats were decided in July or a few weeks later during the primary run-off.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To South Georgians making fine impressions on television singing competitions. Phillip Phillips of Leesburg won “American Idol” this week. Meanwhile, Lowndes High School graduate Stacia Watkins participated in the new ABC show “Duets.” Well done!

Farewell to the vanishing ace
Donald S. “Bush” Bryan was not only a rare individual. He was part of a vanishing breed.
An Adel resident for the past 30 years, Bryan was a World War II flying ace. Not just an ace but a double ace. A pilot must down five enemy aircraft to become an ace; Bryan downed 13.3 enemy planes in Europe. The fractions represent planes downed with other pilots. -
A widespread mosquito alert
In announcing the discovery of a mosquito carrying the West Nile Virus strain, city and health officials did not include the specific location of the discovery.

Of Guantanamo Bay and a Founding Father
Some readers may wonder how a Valdosta High School graduate could bring himself as an attorney to represent a Guantanamo Bay prisoner charged in connection to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

School’s out so watch out!
Summer is a time of rest, vacations and trips. It is a time when school is out, when people take time off from work, when people may stay out a little later. It is a time of swimming, trying new things, and seeking adventure.

Qualifiers are next leaders
While the national media focuses attention on the presidential election, it should be remembered that we will also choose our local leaders this year.
