Thumbs up

VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To Langdale Industries for continuing their environmental commitment to clean energy with the introduction of a natural gas fueling station in Valdosta that will be open to the public. The city, county and school systems have been discussing ways to save on energy costs, and they now have the option of natural gas vs. diesel in their future planning. The Langdale’s plants were the first in the region to use wood waste as a fuel source, around a decade ago, and were also the first to produce and utilize wood pellets for fuel in their plants.

THUMBS UP: To the golfers who gave up their afternoons this week to play in the American Cancer Society Golf Tournament. The three-day event raises thousands of dollars each year for the fight against cancer. More than 50 teams participated, along with a bevy of volunteers, corporate sponsors Cass Burch, and assistance from the host course at Stone Creek, with more than $30,000 raised for the Cancer Society.

THUMBS UP: To Target for hosting a back-to-school shopping spree for area children this week. The Salvation Army teamed with Target to provide school supplies for a number of children. Each child was provided with an $80 gift card to use on supplies and clothing.

THUMBS UP: To the early voters. The primary  election day is Tuesday, and through Friday                 afternoon more than 4,500 registered voters in  Lowndes County had already cast their ballots.        Hot button issues to be decided may have influenced the turnout. Citizens who vote have a direct impact on an election as every vote counts. With the long early and advance voting period prior to the              election day, those who might not have been able to vote on Tuesday could during the last three weeks. The election staff has been working long days, nights and weekends to ensure that the process was smooth and waiting times for voters were minimized.

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
