The art of plenty to do

-- — In today’s paper, readers should find an extensive list of shows, exhibits, concerts and more for the upcoming arts seasons in Valdosta-Lowndes County.

The 2012-13 arts season kicks off this evening with four new exhibits showing at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and later this week with Theatre Guild Valdosta’s opening of the musical “Into the Woods.” And it just keeps rolling non-stop from there.

The list includes plays, musicals, revues, art exhibits, concerts, recitals and more.

If you’ve already looked at this list, it’s hard to believe these are just some of the art events coming through the fall and into next summer. Some organizations are still preparing their seasons. Meanwhile, the list doesn’t include city and county band programs, art exhibits in some other area galleries, and doesn’t even begin to mention the numerous local and regional bands that will play in area clubs.

Looking at this list, it’s hard to believe some folks still argue there’s nothing to do in Valdosta-Lowndes County.

This list proves these nay-sayers wrong. There’s more than enough to do. Some of these shows cost money while many others are free and open to the public.

If you haven’t looked at the arts list yet, give it a read.

You may be surprised to discover more than one show, concert or exhibit you want to see in the weeks and months to come.

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

  • Thumbs up

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
