The Haven Battered Women’s Shelter provides an invaluable service to Valdosta and Lowndes County. If you don’t believe it, see the story in this edition and check out the numbers of women and children whom The Haven helps each year.
Soon, The Haven will begin building a new shelter. This shelter will provide space for a few more women and their children, but it will also give its occupants a better place to stay while they break the chain of domestic violence and prepare for new lives.
While The Haven has funding to cover the majority of its construction costs, the shelter still needs about $80,000 to see the project through completion. Michelle Girtman, The Haven’s executive director for the past four years, says the construction plans have already been scaled back.
Girtman wants to see the current plans go forward so The Haven can offer a better quality of life as well as the services it has been providing Valdosta and Lowndes County women in need since 1988.
Given its 24-year history, it’s possible that The Haven has helped someone you know whether you know it or not.
The Haven keeps its clients’ names and situations confidential for reasons of security and privacy.
So, it is possible that The Haven started a neighbor on a different path, helped a child who is now an adult escape from a violent home, aided a co-worker who broke the cycle of domestic abuse and won a new life. And you may never know.
Helping The Haven not only helps people escape violent situations, it helps people embark on new and better lives.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
