Thumbs up

-- — THUMBS UP: To Wild Adventures. The park re-opens today with two new rides, a Saturday night concert featuring 38 Special, and more. It will be a few more weeks before Splash Island re-opens and even more weeks before the park is open daily. As for weekends, South Georgia’s theme park is back.

THUMBS UP: To Habitat for Humanity volunteers from near and afar helping to build a local home. It is refreshing to see the spirit of community service alive and well even among people who live in other communities.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University’s lecture series. This week, VSU Biology Department hosted its 31st Annual Clyde Eugene Connell Visiting Lecture Program featuring Dr. Terry Norton, director of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Later this month, the VSU College of Arts and Sciences hosts a discussion about the political and cultural revolutions in the Middle East. Hadi Kahalzadeh, visiting scholar at VSU and Iranian political activist, and Labib Nasir, news reporter for Reuters in Jerusalem, will deliver a lecture titled “Arab Spring Revisited,” 6:30 p.m., March 26, Bailey Science Auditorium.

THUMBS UP: To area youth plays. Last week, Little Actors Theatre presented “Guys and Dolls Jr.” This weekend and next, Gingerbread Players of Theatre Guild Valdosta presents “James and the Giant Peach.” This weekend, also, Lowndes High School Off-Broadway presents “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Next week, Valdosta Middle School Players presents “Fame.” The shows highlight the talents of South Georgia’s many young people.

THUMBS UP: To H. Aaron Strickland for a successful Valdosta-Lowndes County Azalea Festival. Great events, great food, a great job for the 13th annual event that spotlights Valdosta’s teeming azalea blooms and the people and things that make our area special. As the festival’s executive director, Strickland brought all of these things together for two fine days.
