VALDOSTA —
THUMBS UP: To the Lowndes County Board of Elections. From its fast and efficient handling of early voting to its quick turnaround in getting the votes counted on election night to its resolve in counting the large number of provisional ballots, Lowndes County Election Supervisor Deb Cox, her staff and the elections board have not only ensured that the democratic system is a right but it is a right that’s easy to exercise.
THUMBS UP: To Valwood School for its annual salute to American veterans. Featuring performances and tributes from students, this show has become an annual tradition and one worth keeping. Veterans come to realize a new generation appreciates their service and sacrifice, while a new generation comes to respect the service and sacrifice of the American veteran.
THUMBS DOWN: To candidates who still haven’t taken down or collected all of their signs. Many candidates have already removed their signs but some have not. You know who you are. Of course, seeing signs in someone’s yard can’t always be blamed on a candidate either. Some folks just like to let others know they supported the winner. Or some like to show defiance by refusing to remove the signs of the losers.
THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University Blazers defensive end Tyler Josey who was named D2football.com’s National Defensive Player of the Week. Josey recorded a team-high four sacks, four tackles for loss and forced three fumbles in the Blazers’ 38-31 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville last week, helping VSU close out the regular season with an 8-2 record.
THUMBS UP: To the organizers of the 36th Annual Lowndes Area Market Hog Show held Tuesday. The tradition keeps South Georgia youth in tune with the region’s agricultural roots and provides youths with an idea of the demands necessary to raise livestock.

Thoughts on graduation
Graduation ceremonies reflect how life marches on. For the students receiving their diplomas and degrees, graduation is a culmination of the majority of their lives’ work.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
