Thumbs up, thumbs down

-- — THUMBS UP: To the Baptist organizers of Community Day. An estimated 25,000 people attended the event which offered food, medical attention, clothes and other items to people in need, no questions asked. It is good to know that when times are tough in South Georgia, the generous get going.

THUMBS UP: To Chad Pigford. The Valdosta Pepsi employee was awarded the company’s prestigious Global Harvey C. Russell Inclusion Award. The award promotes diversity and social responsibility. Pigford hopes his achievement will serve as an example to African-American youth in the community.

THUMBS UP: To Prince Automotive for partnering with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority. Through the Chevrolet Youth Baseball program, Prince will provide thousands of dollars in new equipment, instructional clinics and more to area parks and rec.

THUMBS DOWN: To folks who continued watering during the city’s recent request to cease non-essential watering of lawns, etc. The city made the request to repair mechanical issues with water pumps. Though we think some amendments should be made for folks watering vegetable gardens, folks can do without a green lawn, especially with the little rainfall we’ve had in the past several weeks. Some of the people who openly defy the water restraints would likely be among the first to complain if they had no water for drinking, bathing, laundry, etc.

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

  • Thumbs up

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
