What We Think

February 8, 2010

Rant & Rave for Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010

The bridges in question are in the county. Valdosta government has nothing to do with them. I would, however, like to see the civic center built downtown.

The round-abouts will never work in Valdosta because drivers around here are too stupid. Everyday I see something that just amazes me. People need to actually pay attention to what they are doing and realize that other drivers need to use the road as well.

It is truly discouraging to look at the daily news paper and accept reality of our community's situation. There is only two columns of "Help Wanted" ads versus 10 pages of "Sales/Foreclosures." People are jobless; we are all broke ... is anybody listening?

If you live in South Lowndes County near Brooks County, Florida line and the Withlacoochee, do not monitor Valdosta/Moody river levels, they are inaccurate for us. Monitor the Withlacoochee at Pinetta. By the time we flood here water has receded in Valdosta. I learned this the hard way.

Where are all the new monies from taxes and fees going in Lowndes County? Knight Academy Road is full of potholes, some have been patched. Intersection at that same road and Forest Street is awful.

Before you gossip, remember the skeletons in your own closet and if you only knew the ones in your children's closet, you would never gossip again.

"Thumbs down: To Georgia Sen. Chip Pearson for sponsoring a bill prohibiting Georgians from being implanted with a microchip without their consent." Why would the VDT say Thumbs Down to preventing someone being implanted with a microchip without their consent?

People are surprised drivers ignore yield signs at the traffic circle. You've got to be kidding me. Speed limits and stop signs also seem to be optional here. I know four-letter, single syllable words are a little bit tough for someone educated in South Georgia, but you'd think the red octagon would clue people in.

Let's see how much money the Haitian government will try to extract from the United States to release the missionaries. The U.S. should pack up everything and come home. This is thanks for helping a poor country.

A father's search for answers? I've got a few. The French were defeated in Vietnam by peasants, yet we went in and got beaten. The Russians lost nearly all they had in Afghanistan, and what do we do? We go in, and we're never going to win. Don't we learn anything from history?

  • Parents and schools

There is a lot of talk lately about school systems and grading policies, and how all of a child's problems come back to a lack of parenting. But is it really that simple? Can it be a case where the school systems are so focused on the problem few that the majority of students are ignored?

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP: To Brooks County High School engineering and technology teacher Don Morgan and his students. They recently received national attention for their work with biodiesel fuel. They collect used cooking oil from area fast-food restaurants then process this oil into biodiesel. Morgan hopes to next interest the Brooks County school buses into running on the fuel created in his class. This classroom not only prepares students for the future but may prepare all of us for an alternative energy source.
