What We Think

Thumbs up, thumbs down

-- — THUMBS UP: To Chef Ernest Duncan Sr. for his decades of cooking delicious meals for Valdosta State University events. “I have a passion for people,” he explained. “I think that’s the art behind cooking is you have to love people; you have to have a passion for people and you have to be interested in what they’re interested in.” This passion and interest have served him well as he has served thousands of meals well for generations of VSU students, faculty, staff and administrations.

THUMBS UP: To the Five Points Committee for guiding the process between the city and the county for the new auditorium and library project. Citizen groups are able to discuss issues without politics intervening, and the Five Points committee members have been successful in keeping the project as the goal. Having a group committed to a vision and the future of the community is essential to a project of this magnitude, and the governments should consider future such collaborations.

THUMBS UP: To the winners of The Valdosta Daily Times and Smith Northview Hospital coloring contest for the opening night of Peach State Summer Theatre’s “Go, Dog. Go!” The winners and their guests participated in an ice cream social, won prizes including “Go, Dog. Go!” books donated by Peach State, and saw a funny show. The winners were James Hancock, Jinjer Hammond, Anna Cozart, Katie Thomerson, Donica Farwell, Elizabeth Gibbs, Russell Hunter, Ellie Martin, Rouse Vallotton, Bryce Boyette, Elizabeth Buescher, Anthony Masciarelli, Gabriel Williams, MacKenzie Rogers, Ritter Reagan, J.T. Davis, Ella Burnett, Destiny Lee, Madeline Martin, Anna Weaver, Chance Gully, Jayda Moore, Christy McCranie, Amanda Washabaugh, Ben Hardy.

THUMBS DOWN: To U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for withholding documents from Congress concerning the Fast and Furious secret ATF campaign which has funneled thousands of guns to Mexican drug cartels. As the chief law officer and legal counsel of the government of the United States and the head of the Justice Department, Holder’s actions demonstrate a disdain of the law rather than a willingness to uphold it. Although a Congressional committee hearing next week will determine if Holder will be held in contempt of Congress, Holder should step down now to prevent any further erosion of the American public’s confidence.

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
