VALDOSTA —
Just a few years ago, it seemed the holidays wrapped the first weekend of December.
By that first December Satuday, the region had held its “Nutcracker” dance, the orchestra concert, its Theatre Guild children’s play, a host of other Christmas concerts, and the Christmas parade. There was almost too much to do on that first weekend in December then ... nothing.
Sure, there were still church services, store Santas, family gatherings, shopping, etc., to celebrate the holidays, but the big local shows once concluded were finished.
That was a few years ago.
Granted, this past Saturday was busy, with the parade, the kids Christmas show, Dance Arts and the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra presenting “The Nutcracker,” but there’s more Christmas activities this coming weekend.
Music lovers can enjoy the Valdosta Choral Guild’s “Christmas Delights” concert, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center; or the four concert pianos of CristoFouri performing 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Carolyn Harris Performing Arts Center, Adel; or the Christ Is Come Christmas Tour featuring Big Daddy Weave, tonight, Mathis City Auditorium; or “A Christmas Celebration,” featuring Elma Sanabria, 6 p.m. Friday, Valdosta Church of the Nazarene.
Theatre lovers can enjoy Lowndes High School Off-Broadway’s “Little Town of Christmas,” performing 7 p.m. today, Lowndes High School.
People who enjoy Christmas-themed decorations set in an historical context may enjoy the annual Christmas at The Crescent, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Meanwhile, outlying towns and counties hold their Christmas parades in coming weeks. Next weekend, the Outback Riders hosts the organization’s 20th annual Toy Ride bringing thousands of toys to Lowndes County youngsters in need.

Visit musical roots this weekend
Beginning Saturday, May 18, Nashville, Ga., will be hosting a special Smithsonian exhibit, “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The exhibit will continue through the end of June and Nashville has done a tremendous job in promoting and planning for the exhibit.

A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
