On Tuesday, Peach State Summer Theatre enters its final week of performances for the 2012 season. This means there are only a few more opportunities left to see “Legally Blonde The Musical,” “Go, Dog. Go!” and “The Light in the Piazza.”
“Legally Blonde The Musical” is a stage production based on the Reese Witherspoon movie framed in song-and-dance numbers. It’s about a young sorority girl who hopes to get back her old boyfriend by proving she is serious enough for Harvard Law School. She proves to herself that she is smart enough to excel at Harvard and in the courtroom while being true to herself.
“Go, Dog. Go!” is based on the P.D. Eastman children’s book of the same name. Through a series of songs, dances and set pieces, this show supplies the very definition of family entertainment. Children will love it and so will their parents.
“The Light in the Piazza” is a lush love story set in 1950s Italy. While its trappings are the stuff of the great 20th century musicals, this 2005 Tony Award winner sets a modern tone for greatness in 21st century musicals.
Peach State is professional theatre. Under the umbrella of Valdosta State University Theatre & Dance, PSST!’s directors and casts include professionals found during Southeastern casting calls and VSU students and graduates. Peach State is also the state’s Official Musical Theatre of the State of Georgia.
Some folks often gripe there’s nothing to do in Valdosta without ever really looking around to see what’s offered. If you love professional theatrical musicals or have never seen a live musical but are curious then Peach State has spent the past several weeks offering the antidote.
With only a week left, Tuesday, July 10, through Sunday, July 15, Peach State offers a few more chances to see each show. A definite cure for the summertime blues.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
