THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Rotary Club for hosting columnist Dick Yarbrough at a meeting this week. Yarbrough’s opinion columns appear statewide every week, and in The Times every Saturday. Unfortunately, a Rotary representative gave The Times the incorrect date for his presentation, so neither the publisher nor editor were able to attend the columnist’s speech.
THUMBS UP: To Messiah Lutheran Church for its industry in creating a Vacation Bible School theme that replicates Daniel and the lion’s den for youngsters as well as a Babylonian marketplace and other scenes to bring the biblical stories to life. The church’s Vacation Bible School is scheduled for Aug. 2-5.
THUMBS UP: To the organizers of the 27th Annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament scheduled next week for July 25-27 at Stone Creek Golf Club. Presented by Cass Burch, this tournament has raised untold thousands of dollars for cancer research through the years and plans to do so again this week.

Visit musical roots this weekend
Beginning Saturday, May 18, Nashville, Ga., will be hosting a special Smithsonian exhibit, “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The exhibit will continue through the end of June and Nashville has done a tremendous job in promoting and planning for the exhibit.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
