If you don’t think there’s plenty of talent in Valdosta and Lowndes County, take a look at the photo page in today’s paper.
There, you will find some of the winning entries in the Fourth Annual Valdosta People’s Choice Photo Contest. And to see more winners and even more entries, make a trip to the Tillman Gallery in the Annette Howell Turner Center for Arts, 527 N. Patterson St.
Two things become obvious looking at these various images: Valdosta is an interesting and beautiful place; and South Georgia is blessed with many talented people.
Sponsored by the City of Valdosta, the contest asks area folks to take photos within the city limits. Participants don’t have to live in Valdosta, but their images must reflect life within the city.
Photographers could enter images in five categories: Lights, Camera, Action (People Expressing Art); Over the Rainbow (This Beautiful City); Animal House (Furred and Feathered Friends); It Takes a Village (People Living Life); Taking Care of Business (A City at Work). Also, for the first time, youngsters, ages 14 and under, could enter their works.
Exhibited for the past several weeks in the arts center, visitors were asked to cast votes for their favorite images. So, the people chose the winning works featured on our photo page.
Three years ago, the city received 39 entries in the first contest. This year, the fourth contest received 106 entries.
If you don’t get a chance to see more of these photos at the arts center, they will soon be appearing in areas throughout the region. A traveling exhibit will feature the photos at Valdosta City Hall, The Valdosta Daily Times, Valdosta Mall, James H. Rainwater Conference Center, South Georgia Regional Library, Smith Northview Hospital, City of Valdosta Customer Service Center, Valdosta Regional Airport.
Fourth Annual Valdosta People’s Choice Photo Contest is a fine look at the place where we live and work.
It provides unique glimpses into the familiar place many of us call home.

Tornado: An aftermath of help
Seeing the massive path of destruction left in the wake of tornadoes in Oklahoma Monday was a sobering reminder of the power of spring storms.

Thoughts on graduation
Graduation ceremonies reflect how life marches on. For the students receiving their diplomas and degrees, graduation is a culmination of the majority of their lives’ work.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

Happy Mother’s Day!
A few years ago, a television commercial asked, Who first believed in you? Many folks may have instinctively answered by simply saying, Mom.

Thumbs up
THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.

Celebrating nurses
She is considered the founder of modern nursing so it seems only natural that National Nurses Week would include Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
