VALDOSTA —
This weekend, Peach State Summer Theatre opens its eighth season with a production of the recent Broadway hit, “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”
In the coming weeks, two additional musicals follow: the live stage show of “Go, Dog. Go!” and “The Light in the Piazza.”
PSST! believes these shows will continue the growing tradition of the musical theatre programs which opened in 2005 in Valdosta with “The Tuesday Afternoon Regulars,” “Seussical,” and “Chicago,” continued in 2006 with “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” “The Fantasticks,” and “Gypsy,” in 2007 with “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “A Year with Frog and Toad,” and “Cabaret,” 2008 with “Singin’ In The Rain,” Disney’s “Aladdin,” and “Ragtime,” 2009 with “Big River,” “Once Upon This Island” and “The Producers,” 2010 with “White Christmas,” Disney’s “Mulan,” and “The Secret Garden,” and last year with “Carousel,” “The Jungle Book” and “Hairspray.”
As more people discover the magic of Peach State, audience attendance has grown. That magic is professional musical theatre built on the national reputation of Valdosta State University’s theatre program. Peach State is a professional repertory company that hires working actors and technical staff during auditions throughout the Southeast while giving professional experience to many of VSU Theatre & Dance’s talented students.
The 2012 season will build upon past successes which have included the General Assembly designating Peach State as the official musical theatre of the State of Georgia. And while audiences enjoy the shows of this season, Peach State is already preparing for the 2013 season.
Peach State believes in the prospect that Valdosta is no longer a stop-over on the way to Florida, or a place for travelers merely to gas and eat and be on their way. But rather, in making Valdosta its home, PSST! took a leap of faith that Valdosta is becoming a destination for travelers.
The Valdosta Daily Times believes in that possibility, too, and has signed on again as a corporate sponsor of Peach State Summer Theatre. On with the shows!

Visit musical roots this weekend
Beginning Saturday, May 18, Nashville, Ga., will be hosting a special Smithsonian exhibit, “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The exhibit will continue through the end of June and Nashville has done a tremendous job in promoting and planning for the exhibit.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
