For more than half a century, Valdosta and Lowndes County government, business and civic leaders have traveled to Atlanta to meet with state legislators and officials.
They will do so again at the annual Bird Supper scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The purpose: To promote what South Georgia, specifically Valdosta and Lowndes County, has to offer as well as let leaders know what our area needs to continue thriving.
For years, the Bird Supper had Valdosta folks sharing quail and grits with governors and legislators. In the past several years, the annual supper has become more about South Georgians meeting with the office staffs of governors and other legislators.
How much influence the Bird Supper now has upon state leaders may not seem obvious, but the local presence in the state capitol may have some impact. Each year, Valdosta and Lowndes County representatives continue to organize, travel north, and participate in the event.
Each year, dozens of legislators reserve spots for the Bird Supper.
The Bird Supper may not hold the same sway as it has in the past, but who knows what one positive encounter might inspire. A spark from one conversation over supper might reap rewards for Valdosta and Lowndes County’s future.
The Bird Supper may no longer soar, but it’s not grounded, either.

Visit musical roots this weekend
Beginning Saturday, May 18, Nashville, Ga., will be hosting a special Smithsonian exhibit, “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The exhibit will continue through the end of June and Nashville has done a tremendous job in promoting and planning for the exhibit.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
