Don’t jettison landmark

VALDOSTA — While we respect the request to relocate the F-86 aircraft from outside Mathis City Auditorium to the new Moody Air Force Base Airpark, we would hope the city and MAFB would reconsider moving it.

Donated by the U.S. Air Force Museum to honor the death of Valdosta’s Maj. Lyn McIntosh, Moody would like to see it on base. The McIntosh family has reportedly agreed to the plane being moved to the base, according to information presented during Tuesday’s Valdosta City Council work session.

City Council is scheduled to consider the relocation during today’s regular session.

So, why would The Times ask all parties to reconsider?

Because the plane has been located at the corner of Woodrow Wilson Drive along North Ashley Street for decades. It has become a recognizable landmark within our city limits.

Through the years, numerous people have posed for photographs in front of the aircraft. It has even acquired its own legendary lore, with what has seemed like 50 percent of the town claiming heritage to the person responsible for placing the plane at the site while the other 50 percent claims a relative once piloted the aircraft.

Yet, more importantly, the jet has become a symbol. A tangible link between Valdosta and Moody Air Force Base. The plane stands as a monument to Major McIntosh but it also stands as testament to Valdosta’s commitment to Moody Air Force Base.

Each day, the plane serves as a reminder to anyone traveling along Ashley Street of the importance of Moody not only to our community but to the safeguard of our nation.

Civilians need more reminders of such sacrifices, which is why we respectfully ask that the plane remain where it stands.
