VALDOSTA —
On Monday, Oct. 1, Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins and The Valdosta Daily Times plans commemorating this event with survivor interviews throughout the coming weeks, stories about women battling breast cancer, a Valdosta Scene magazine cover story on an area organization devoted to the importance of mammograms in detecting breast cancer early, and more.
The Times plans to raise both awareness and funds to battle breast cancer.
Every October, the number of pink ribbons attest to the number of South Georgia women who have survived, who are battling breast cancer, and those who lost the fight.
October reminds us of just how many women we know and love, those who are co-workers, neighbors, friends and family, battle this disease.
Breast cancer pays no heed to socio-economics, race, or age. It can strike any woman, at any time.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month should not be viewed as a topic to be considered for a few weeks each year in the fall then ignored the remaining 11 months of each year.
As too many women and families know, as The Times has seen too often with stories about South Georgia women, breast cancer strikes women every day throughout the year.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about raising awareness, raising funds, sharing information and needs. But it’s not just about October.
It’s about reminding us that funds must be raised, precautions must be taken, and the battle will continue being fought each and every day until there is a cure.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
