THUMBS UP: To the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts for presenting this evening’s “American Soundtrack” concert featuring music from throughout the 20th century. The show will include big band, rock & roll, country, pop, and more. While “American Soundtrack” highlights numerous songs, it also showcases numerous Valdosta and Lowndes County singers, musicians and dancers. Valdosta is blessed with many talented people from many walks of life. The show plays 7:30 p.m. today, James H. Rainwater Conference Center.
THUMBS UP: One more time for Peach State Summer Theatre. Today and Sunday are the last opportunities to see the 2012 shows. “Go, Dog. Go!” plays this afternoon. “Legally Blonde The Musical” plays tonight. “The Light in the Piazza” plays Sunday afternoon. If you haven’t already seen these fine musicals, this is it. Fans are already waiting with anticipation for the announcement of the 2013 PSST! shows.
THUMBS UP: To Georgia General Assembly House Speaker David Ralston, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones and Majority Leader Larry O’Neal for visiting Valdosta earlier this week. While each legislator represents a district in the state, they represent all of Georgia as legislative leaders. It’s good to see leaders who are traditionally more known for their roles in Atlanta visit South Georgia.
THUMBS UP: To Cole Tucker, a 10-year-old Hahira Elementary School student who won a Terry Fator ventriloquism scholarship. As part of winning the nationwide competition, Cole travels this weekend to attend a ventriloquists convention in Kentucky, where he hopes to meet the famed ventriloquist Terry Fator.

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

Happy Mother’s Day!
A few years ago, a television commercial asked, Who first believed in you? Many folks may have instinctively answered by simply saying, Mom.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
