VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To Valdosta State University Athletics for its 2012 Chili Fest scheduled for this afternoon, 3-5:30 p.m. at the PE Complex. Should be some good eating even if we’re not experiencing the traditional January winter weather. Plus, it’s an old-style no-bean chili event. Tasty, indeed.

THUMBS UP: To VSU Music for consistently presenting a series of free recitals, concerts and other events for the public. Each week, VSU Music features recitals from its students, faculty and visiting guests. They play a wide range of classical music, as well as jazz and other genres. These concerts are a treat and a boon to our community. And they don’t cost a thing … the perfect entertainment to enrich our lives.

THUMBS UP: To VSU Athletics’ 16th Annual Hall of Fame inductees. They are Eddie Fisher, Tommy Johnson, Owen Harris, Antonio Speed, Eva Petschnig, Christoph Schneider and John Hansen. They were inducted in a ceremony last weekend. Congratulations on the past accomplishments that made this most recent accomplishment  possible.

THUMBS UP: To outgoing Lake Park Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dan Bremer for his satirical “Getting Even” tribute to people who have had a positive influence on Lake Park in the past year. He began this tribute with a quote: “The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you.” He included in this tribute three longtime City of Lake Park employees who were unceremoniously fired during a City Council meeting earlier this month. Former Lake Park Police Chief Bert Rutland, former Fire Chief David Brown and former City Clerk Ann Peterson received a well-deserved standing ovation from those attending the chamber dinner. We have to wonder if Lake Park City Council is getting even a remote clue as to what these folks meant to many in the community?

  • Events that get things done

Finding something that repeatedly attracts the public is difficult enough, but finding an event that accomplishes that feat while also promoting your organization and helping others … well, in many places, that’s a rarity.
Not so for the Valdosta area.

  • Happy Mother's Day!

Mother. Mama. Mommy. Ma. Mom. She fed us when we were too small to feed ourselves. She nurtured us, clothed us, cleaned us, protected us.
She helped us form our first words.
