ADEL —
Tourism is a boon to the state, and even in a slow-moving economic time, Georgia manages to attract a large number of visitors. While the numbers from northern and midwest states may have declined, the region is more than making up for the loss as people are staying closer to home to vacation these days.
An excellent point raised by the Deputy Commissioner for Tourism, Kevin Langston, in an interview Monday is that all too often, Georgians don’t realize the gems they have close to them. People think they have to leave the state to find a place to vacation, but Langston insists that’s not the case. A quick perusal of the state’s tourism website, exploregeorgia.org has some terrific ideas for visitors to explore.
Want a mountain getaway? Try Helen, the quaint alpine village nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
How about a weekend in the sun? TybeeIsland near Savannah or the coastal beaches of Jekyll Island or St. Simons make the perfect visit for a little sun and sand.
Or maybe you want a working vacation? Try one of the state’s agri-tours or visit the Okefenokee Swamp.
For those interested in historic sites, Plains is a must-visit for Pres. Jimmy Carter fans, as is Andersonville for Civil War buffs, or, for serious movie buffs, try the Gone With the Wind tour.
The state has so many festivals, events, and fairs it would be impossible to list them all, but there’s one just about every weekend somewhere, from barbecue to cherry blossoms to honey bees.
Georgia is full of gems; you just have to find them!

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
