THUMBS UP: To the organizers of Homeless-4-A-Night. The event shines a light on the problem of homelessness in our region by placing people in a situation where they must camp out for an evening. More importantly, it offers the opportunity for people with homes to meet people without homes and realize that people are people. And for many, the step between having a home and being homeless is as simple as a pay check or two.
THUMBS UP: To all the bareback riders, saddle bronc riders, tie down calf ropers, team ropers, steer wrestlers, bull riders, barrel racers and more who traveled to Nashville for the Cotton Blossom Roundup professional rodeo.
The greatest show on dirt, which is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, will conclude tonight and will feature Berrien High School and Berrien Academy juniors and seniors competing in a calf scramble.
THUMBS DOWN: To area officials who continue to refer to the opponents of the biomass plant as a “fringe” group. Far more citizens are concerned about the plant than officials would like for the public to believe. Thankfully, the city council allowed them to speak at Thursday’s meeting, but the issue is not going away until their health concerns are addressed.
THUMBS DOWN: To Mayor John Fretti for insulting his own council members this week. His public tirades against the newspaper, county officials and others who dare to disagree are common, but to attack those who are duly elected to public office to serve alongside him, not for him, is out of bounds and ethically questionable.

Visit musical roots this weekend
Beginning Saturday, May 18, Nashville, Ga., will be hosting a special Smithsonian exhibit, “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The exhibit will continue through the end of June and Nashville has done a tremendous job in promoting and planning for the exhibit.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
