Golf tournament battles cancer

VALDOSTA — Battling cancer seems a never-ending war. Yet, for anyone who has ever had cancer, for anyone who has a friend or relative who has struggled against cancer, it is a battle worth waging.

Through all of the years of donations, research and fundraisers such as the Relay for Life, medical science has made progress against cancer.

Look at the Survivors Walk during the Relay for Life. Not too many years ago, only a few people would have survived cancer to walk that walk. Now, dozens of survivors make the lap each year.

Step by step, fundraiser by fundraiser, person by person, dollar by dollar, strides are being made in the fight against cancer.

Starting today, the American Cancer Society golf tournament will continue doing its part as it has for nearly 30 years.

Hosted by Stone Creek Golf Course and presented by Cass Burch, , the annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament had signed several teams.

At $500 per team, the money benefits cancer research.

Lowndes County Commission Chairman Ashley Paulk has chaired the tournament for years. As he has said in the past, “You never know which dollar is going to be the dollar (that leads to cancer being cured). I hope we raise that magic dollar.”

We do, too.

Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.
