What We Think: Vikings looking for a homecoming win

The Lowndes High School Vikings are ranked No. 16 in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 nation poll, No. 5 in the nation by the National Prep Poll, No. 11 in the nation by ESPN, No. 32 in the nation by Rivals, No. 1 in Class AAAAA by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and No. 3 in Class AAAAA by the Georgia Sports Writers Association.

The Lowndes High School Vikings have won five Georgia State Championships — the titles captured in 1980, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Maybe they will pick up another state championship this year.

All signs certainly point in that direction, as they opened the 2009 football season with a 75-14 win over Woodland High School from Henry County on Aug. 28.

The Lowndes High School Vikings will take to the football field tonight for homecoming. Kickoff for the second of three non-region 1-AAAAA games — this one against Peachtree Ridge High School from Suwanee — is at 8 p.m. Everyone, from the fans to the players to the coaches, are hoping for a win.

An annual tradition, homecoming has historically been a time of welcoming back old friends, a time for parades, dances, tailgating, pep rallies, and the crowning of the homecoming king and queen. This year Lowndes High School’s homecoming theme is “Under the Big Top: The Greatest Homecoming on Earth.”

The week-long circus-themed celebration will end on Saturday with the homecoming dance, which is simply referred to as The Greatest Dance on Earth. Chaperones will dress like clowns, jugglers, as well as other circus performers. Popcorn, cotton candy, lemonade and animal crackers will be served.

For current Lowndes High School students, along with graduates who no longer live in this area, this is stacking up to be a homecoming all Vikings will remember for years to come.

If you’re one of the alumni who traveled several miles to attend the festivities, we are certain that you will agree that, in the words of Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” “There’s no place like home.”
