THUMBS UP: To all of the students who will be graduating from Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Valdosta State University this week. You have worked hard to obtain your degree and deserve recognition for your achievement. Times may be tough, but well trained and educated employees are always welcome in the workforce.
THUMBS UP: To the spectators and supporters of the South Georgia Classic Nationwide Tour event at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. This event is an economic boon for the community and raises recognition of the South Georgia region. The corporate sponsors, grandstand sponsors, and volunteers are wonderful ambassadors for Valdosta-Lowndes County, creating a great impression on visitors.
THUMBS UP: To all the participants in the Relay for Life. The event will end this morning as the newspaper is being delivered, and those who spent the entire night at the track, walking and participating in the various events and fellowship offered are to be commended. The money raised goes to a terrific cause, finding a cure for cancer. Everyone can name at least one cancer victim in their family or social circle, and thanks to the research being done, many who experience the disease have a terrific chance at surviving it, unthinkable just a decade or two ago.
THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Baptist Association, the organizers of the 4th Annual Community Day event, being held today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the vacant field across from Sam’s Club. The event offers clothing, food, and other necessities to those in need, along with medical check ups, hair cuts, Bibles, hygiene kits and more. There are activities to keep children busy and concessions are available at the site. At least 1,000 volunteers will be on hand to assist in helping the 15,000 people in need who are expected to attend.

Tornado: An aftermath of help
Seeing the massive path of destruction left in the wake of tornadoes in Oklahoma Monday was a sobering reminder of the power of spring storms.

Thoughts on graduation
Graduation ceremonies reflect how life marches on. For the students receiving their diplomas and degrees, graduation is a culmination of the majority of their lives’ work.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

Happy Mother’s Day!
A few years ago, a television commercial asked, Who first believed in you? Many folks may have instinctively answered by simply saying, Mom.

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.

Celebrating nurses
She is considered the founder of modern nursing so it seems only natural that National Nurses Week would include Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
