Generally speaking, local government elections, even with mayors on the ballot, attract a low turnout and a degree of voter empathy. But this year will be different, because this year there will be two very important issues on the ballot. The caveat is that they will only appear on Valdosta city ballots.

The first is the initiative to unify the two school systems by folding the Valdosta charter and integrating into the county charter. There would be a new school board elected from the entire county if the initiative passes, as the Department of Justice would have to approve the districts.

The second issue is whether or not to approve Sunday sales of alcohol in package and grocery stores. Currently, alcohol can be sold on Sunday but only in restaurants where food is being served. No one can buy beer, wine or liquor by the bottle at convenience, grocery or package stores.

Given the attention that these two initiatives have already received, particularly the consolidation question, this November’s election may see a record number of voters.

Which would be a good thing for the community.
