What We Think

Thumbs up, Thumbs down

-- — THUMBS UP: To the stroke program at South Georgia Medical Center. Dr. Brian Dawson and the dedicated staff just received a significant achievement award from the American Heart/American Stroke Association. The stroke program is only a year old and has already achieved levels of excellence and recognition that no other hospital in the region can claim. Dr. Dawson and staff are providing professional levels of care designed to significantly increase a patient’s odds of surviving a stroke through early intervention. Congratulations to the staff and administration at SGMC for implementing this critical program in our region.

THUMBS UP: To Becky Wetherington and her Labrador Retriever Whidbey. As a Hahira Elementary assistant principal, Wetherington has made Whidbey a regular sight at the school. Whidbey is  an Assistance Dogs International-certified dog.          His primary purpose as an ADI dog: Spread joy.  Bred and trained to work in social situations,        Whidbey is a welcome friend for many students.

THUMBS DOWN: To the overzealous arm-chair quarterback. With the high school exhibition games past and the season pressing down, the sniping likely began last night before the games ended. Fans unhappy with coaches. Fans unhappy with plays. Fans unhappy with players. People love their football and they love their teams, but adults bad talking a bunch of high school kids because they don’t appreciate the way they play ball, well, there isn’t anything adult about that at all.

THUMBS UP: To Senior Living Showcase participants. From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today, The Valdosta Daily Times hosts the annual Senior Living Showcase at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center. Dozens of vendors present services available in health care, fitness, home ideas and more for the area’s senior citizens. The Times thanks everyone for their participation in this fun, informative and worthwhile endeavor.

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

  • Happy Mother’s Day!

  • Thumbs up

THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.
