For decades, the Empty Stocking Fund has brought joy to generations of local children. Yes, local children.
The Empty Stocking Fund provides toys to children who may otherwise not receive a toy come Christmas morning or the Christmas season. Children right down the road or right across town or on the next block over.
The Empty Stocking Fund gives Santa a helping hand while each donor gives a helping hand to a child who lives here in Valdosta-Lowndes County.
Think of your Christmases past, think of your favorite toy or gift, think of all the gifts and wonder and anticipation that came with the Christmases of your childhood ...
Now, Grinch your memories. Imagine your childhood Christmases without those toys and gifts that added to the wonder of the season, that brought some extra magic to being a child.
Without the Empty Stocking Fund that is what many local children face. They face an empty stocking come Christmas morning. They face no presents under the tree.
In the Bible, the Magi traveled many miles to see the Christ child. They came bearing gifts. Gifts for a child. Maybe that’s why these three kings are called wise men.
Perhaps there is wisdom in giving gifts to children. Perhaps charity and compassion are attributes of wisdom. Perhaps helping the children of one’s community is an attribute of the wise and the caring.

Twenty years ago, most area elections were decided during the primaries. Then, almost every candidate qualified as a Democrat. While there may be plenty of challengers on the ballot, many seats were decided in July or a few weeks later during the primary run-off.

An Adel resident for the past 30 years, Bryan was a World War II flying ace. Not just an ace but a double ace. A pilot must down five enemy aircraft to become an ace; Bryan downed 13.3 enemy planes in Europe. The fractions represent planes downed with other pilots. -

Theatre Guild Valdosta’s rollicking comedy, “Caught in the Net,” officially brings to a close a magnificent schedule of shows ranging from theatre to opera to concerts to art exhibits and more from a variety of area venues. Theatre Guild will also open the 2012-13 season this summer with the musical “Into the Woods.” Until then, arts lovers can soon enjoy a new series of exhibits from the year-round Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and three musicals starting in two weeks from Peach State Summer Theatre.
