What We Think: Thumbs up

THUMBS UP: To members of the Georgia Search and Rescue Task Force No. 2 for their efforts to rescue three workers trapped in a water tower in Homerville for several hours. The three men fell while sandblasting inside of the 150-foot, 500,000-gallon tower. Two of them sustained injuries from the fall.

THUMBS UP: To airmen with the Moody Air Force Base 822nd Security Forces Squadron. About 200 men and women returned home on Tuesday after six months at Camp Bucca in Iraq. They completed their mission and turned things over to the Iraqis.

THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Fire Department for its quick response to a house fire on South Troup Street. Chief J.D. Rice said the fire started in the laundry room, but his firefighters were able to put it out quickly.

THUMBS UP: To everyone who has supported the Greater Valdosta United Way’s campaign and The Salvation Army’s Empty Stocking Fund so far this year. Donations are still desperately needed. While the United Way works tirelessly to ensure those in the community who are less fortunate have food, clothing, shelter and other necessities throughout the year, the Empty Stocking Fund puts gifts under the trees of some of the area’s poorest children. It takes so little, with everyone working together, to make a difference.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta High School’s Fine Arts Department for an entertaining holiday show. The talented drama, choral, dance and band students are a source of pride for the Valdosta City School System and commit several hours before, during and after school each day to perfecting their skills.

THUMBS UP: To Catherine Creamer for being one of four top finalists in a contest sponsored by the McDonald’s Corporation to select the 2010 theme for Employee Appreciation Week. A crew trainer at the Bemiss Road McDonald’s, she has been with the fast-food chain for a little less than three years.

What We Think
  • What we think: Public has right to know

The accidental release of three inmates from the Lowndes County Jail was an unfortunate incident.

  • What we think: Wanted: Your vote

Early voting for the runoff election to see who will make it to the November general election begins today at the Elections Office in Lowndes County, 2808 N. Oak St.
If you voted in the primary election, you can only vote in the runoff election for the same party you voted previously.

  • What We Think: Wanting answers for Wanat

Family of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan have wanted answers.

  • Severe heat warnings

More than two thirds of the counties in Georgia were on extreme heat alerts Monday as temperatures rose to the high 90s with a heat index well over 100 degrees.

  • Where’s the money?

As part of a large transportation public hearing this week, the city unveiled its proposed plans for the new Gateways Project that will affect West Hill Avenue from Interstate 75 to downtown, and Madison Highway from the airport to South Patterson Street.

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS DOWN: To the candidates who have not removed their campaign signs from area roadways and yards. The only candidates who need signs at this point are those heading into the runoff and — maybe — those who are already guaranteed a place on the November ballot.

    July 23, 2010

  • What we think: One vote

Think your vote doesn’t matter?  Did you have a candidate you liked but didn’t vote because you thought, well, what’s one vote?

  • What we think: Sad end for Fresh Start

Fresh Start seems to have been a good idea that came to a rotten end this week.  After all, there was the disappointed anger of those turned away a few weeks ago because the program lacked the manpower to handle hundreds of applications at one time.

  • Election vote

Every election is important, but some seem more important than others.  This is one of those elections.  With the state’s budget on the ropes, education funding bled nearly dry, and a multitude of other issues crowding for attention, management and money, this may well be one of the most important elections in Georgia’s history.
