We moved here five years ago. The first time we drove by Five Points, we thought, what a dump, and right in the middle of town. We wondered why Valdosta didn’t do something about it. Now they are trying to. We applaud their efforts to clean up a huge, long-standing eyesore that the owners apparently do not care about. Why should Patterson Street be the only scenic area in town?
Thanks to the delivery and post-partum nurses at SGMC for all their services. You went above and beyond all expectations during our stay last week. Job well done!
Deputy York, thank you for your kindness and assistance in changing my tire on the interstate on Sunday, Dec. 13. Other deputies passed me, and you stopped and changed my tire in the rain and heavy traffic. You are a very respectful and generous person. We need more kind souls in this town. Thank you.
The rant about police presence in crime-infested areas is a perfect example of why this city is suffering from these crimes. How about holding the persons committing the crimes responsible and not the police? The police can’t do everything. We as citizens must help them.
I can’t believe the arrogance of John Fretti and Larry Hanson in trying to condemn the Five Points Shopping Center. We need to defeat John Fretti as soon as possible and transfer Hanson to New Jersey. What gives these two citizens the right to influence our City Council in such Communistic behavior. How much longer can we citizens stand this kind of behavior? Where is John Galt?
Five Points is a eye sore. If the property owners don’t want to keep it up, then the city has a right to condemn the property, according to the highest Supreme Court of the USA which voted on this rule. It would be nice to have a new auditorium. Also would bring more jobs to the city.
To the person/persons that broke into my house a week before Christmas and took all of my children’s gifts, I hope that yours have a Merry Christmas. We understand the true meaning of Christmas and will enjoy it no matter what you did to us. You will have to answer for the things that you have done one day. Just remember that.
We experienced the Toy Run in Downtown Valdosta first hand. It was absolutely amazing to watch motorcyclists full of holiday spirit riding by, waving, and tossing out candy to any kids who were nearby. I applaud all of you and your cause.

Parents and schools
There is a lot of talk lately about school systems and grading policies, and how all of a child's problems come back to a lack of parenting. But is it really that simple? Can it be a case where the school systems are so focused on the problem few that the majority of students are ignored?

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Brooks County High School engineering and technology teacher Don Morgan and his students. They recently received national attention for their work with biodiesel fuel. They collect used cooking oil from area fast-food restaurants then process this oil into biodiesel. Morgan hopes to next interest the Brooks County school buses into running on the fuel created in his class. This classroom not only prepares students for the future but may prepare all of us for an alternative energy source.

Just the facts, please
The Times has taken some hits this weekend following the reporting of the Rev. Floyd Rose’ rally on Saturday concerning the car which drove into a home, killing an infant on New Year’s, and an incident at Pinevale Learning Center. Some police officers think the VDT is not being fair, and Rose accused the VDT of not printing the facts, but the facts are as follows:
-
Fathers teaching daughters
It began as a small gathering for fathers and daughters. It has become one of Valdosta’s most popular social events of the year.
Several years ago, Jeff Stewart co-founded the event with his wife, Becky, as a way for him to give a special night to his two daughters. Other fathers of First Presbyterian Church liked the idea and the Father-Daughter Valentine Dance was born. -
Sports tourneys: They will come
More than 20 years after its release, “Field of Dreams’” mantra, “If you build it, they will come,” has possibly become one of the most overused lines from any movie. Yet, it seems all too fitting for what’s been happening lately within the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority.
