Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down for Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010

THUMBS DOWN: To Arrow Trucking. The Tulsa, Okla.-based business notified hundreds of its truck drivers that they had been laid off by canceling their fuel cards and towing their trucks. Sure, they offered them a bus ticket home, but many of the drivers were left stranded when the company refused to help those riding with them get back as well.

THUMBS UP: To Winnersville Elite Senior 3 Team members for earning a bid to the International All-Level Worlds competition in April 2010. The team consists of 20 girls from the Valdosta area.

THUMBS UP: To the dedicated men and women of the Valdosta Police Department, Lowndes County Fire Rescue, Valdosta Fire Department, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol for keeping each of us as safe as possible in 2009. The last year was a difficult one with all of the murders and assaults, burglaries and robberies, wrecks and fires. Maybe 2010 will bring better times and a little more happy news.

THUMBS DOWN: To 2009. Last year will go down in history as one of the worst ever, as a year full of layoffs, furloughs, company closings, crime sprees, foreclosures and more. Hopefully, many of us have learned something from these hard times that will make us better in the New Year. You know what they say, when you hit rock bottom, the only place you have to go is up.
